Nilda’s Story

I was born Nilda Esperanza (from the root hope), one of five children in Mendosa, Argentina. When I was 15 the family moved to Jujuy, in the far North East of the country. We were a very strict Catholic family attending church regularly.

My youngest brother, Samuel, died in a tragic accident when he was 3. Mum and dad were distraught by this tragedy but through this came to personal faith in the risen Lord Jesus. I noticed the change in my parent’s life style. However life was not easy for us as we were rejected by our Catholic friends. My parents took us to an evangelical church on Sundays. One special weekend there was a film about the rapture and this really made me and my three sisters really think. We did not want to be left behind when Jesus came again. My three sisters and I gave our lives to Jesus that week.

I was 15 at that time and we loved to learn Christian songs in the family home as our new friends came from the church and taught us. We learned many verses of the Bible Stories in ‘comic’ form.
Very soon after this we had to move to Jujuy in the north and there we joined a large evangelical church. When I finished secondary school I started to work with a German missionary family who worked specifically with street children and single parents. Their prayer lives and work challenged me to make a deeper commitment to Jesus.  They enabled me to study mission with Operation Mobilisation, first for a weekend and then for months at a time over a period of 10 years. During these years I
went on missions to Paraguay and Brazil. On one of these mission journeys we met a missionary nurse and I saw the desperate need for medical assistance. My German missionary boss was able to arrange sponsorship to train as a nurse as long as I resigned and so loose all my income. This was a real challenge!

I learned that God is absolutely trustworthy and He provided for me on a day to day basis…. More than I could expect in my whole life. He gave
back more than I ‘gave up’ for Him. As a nurse I earned more than I lost when I resigned. I was able to use my nursing skills to reach the lost. (more) He also gave me a husband! (Lee was on a mission visit from England and we met because he was to play at the wedding of one of my friend’s sister.)

When I look back it is amazing how God timed everything. We were married when Argentina was on a financial ‘high’ but soon after there was an economic crash but God continued to provide.

Coming to England was a real challenge. I could not understand the culture, the language, could not understand the sermons, sing the hymns, but worse I could not share my faith. I had to just rest in Him.

As the children came along I started to mix with mums and dads, build friendships, develop relationships and became involved  with the playgroup and the Churches in Bawtry and was able again to share my faith.

We return to Argentina with the children almost each year for family time and to work in the local churches, one of which is in my father’s house. (more).

Now that Lee has completed his course at Mattersey Bible College we plan to return to Argentina with Action Partners/ Pioneers.
